Atsushi Nakamura received the B.E., M.E. and Dr.Eng. degrees from Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, in 1985, 1987 and 2001, respectively.

In 1987, he joined Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Corporation and engaged in the research and development of a network service platform, the Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN), that can provide telecommunication services flexibly and network-widely, at Musashino Electrical Communication Laboratories (ECL), Tokyo. His work at the ECL included the research on designing efficient and reliable service-node systems for the AIN and the studies on application of speech processing technologies into telecommunication services. During his career at the ECL, he experienced the development of several large-scale testbed systems for advanced telecommunications.

From February, 1994 to March, 2000, he was with Advanced Telecommunications Research (ATR) Institute International, Kyoto, as a Senior Researcher, and was working on the research of spontaneous speech recognition, the construction of spoken language database and the development of speech translation systems. His dissertation was organized based on these works at the ATR. Also, he directed the development of a cellular-phone based speech translation system which is easily accessible anywhere when users have only a cellular-phone. Since its first release in November, 1999, this testbed system was frequently demonstrated on TV news programs and widely featured in newspapers as a hot topic.

From April, 2000 to March, 2014, he was with NTT Communication Science Laboratories, Kyoto, and engaged in the research of speech recognition under real environments, application of machine learning techniques into spoken language processing, etc., at the head of Signal Processing Resrach Group.

Since April, 2014, Dr. Nakamura has been with Graduate School of Natural Sciences, Nagoya City University.

Also, he serves or served as a lecturer for his alma mater, Kyushu University, for Nagoya University, Aichi, Japan, and for Kansai University, Osaka, Japan, and serves as a visiting or invited professor for Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, for Osaka University, Osaka, Japan, and for Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Nara, Japan.

Dr. Nakamura is a senior member of IEEE, and a member of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE), and the Acoustical Society of Japan (ASJ). He also plays a key role of academic functions, such as Regular Reviewer for journal papers of the IEICE and of the ASJ, Secretary at Kansai Chapter of the ASJ (02-03), Councilor at Kansai Chapter of the ASJ (07-), Vice Chair at Kansai Chapter of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (08-), and Member of IEEE Machine Learning for Signal Processing Technical Committee (09-).
