In April 2018, a new “School of Biology and Integrated Sciences” was established!

Nagoya City University established the School of Biology and Integrated Sciences in April 2018. This is the first time in 76 years that a faculty of science has been established in the three Tokai prefectures. Let’s study natural sciences (biology, physics, and chemistry) and mathematical and information sciences (mathematics and information science) comprehensively at a university in Nagoya, the center of Japan!

What is the “Biology and Integrated Sciences”?

Focus on Life Science

Deep understanding of science as a whole

To develop a large amount of ability to think

Today’s science is divided into many specialized fields, and it is not uncommon for people to be unaware of anything outside their own field of expertise. However, new discoveries that surprise everyone are often found at the boundaries of various academic fields.

Our school, which is a new concept from the old school of science that specialized in a particular field of study, provides students with a broad knowledge of the fundamentals of various academic fields, followed by study in a specific field of specialization. By doing so, we aim to nurture individuals who can contribute to the local community by acquiring the ability to appropriately analyze and lead to solutions to the issues that each individual faces.

Not just biology! You can learn all about physics, chemistry, mathematics, and information!

The core study subject in our department is “Science“. Students learn the basics of science, focusing on life sciences, including natural sciences (chemistry and physics), mathematics, and information science, with the goal of becoming specialized professionals. The fields of study in our department are categorized into three areas: “Life Sciences“, “Materials Science“, and “Mathematical Information Science“.

Materials science Life sciences Mathematical information science
The class of materials science offers chemistry, physics, and geoscience, ranging from basic to advanced levels. Materials science is an interdisciplinary field of study that is not only associated with the basics of life sciences but also deeply related to mathematics and information science. Furthermore, it includes the academic fields of physical chemistry, organic chemistry, condensed matter physics, and astrophysics. The class in life sciences offers the study of a wide range of life phenomena, including molecules, individuals, and ecology, ranging from basic to advanced levels. Life sciences are interdisciplinary because this field of study requires an understanding of the basics of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and information science to deeply comprehend it. In addition, it includes the academic fields of ecology, physiology, evolutionary biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, applied biology, and molecular genetics. The class in mathematical information science offers mathematics and information science, ranging from basic to advanced levels. Mathematical information science is an interdisciplinary field associated with the basics and data analysis of life sciences and materials science. Furthermore, it is involved in several academic fields, such as geometry, algebra, information mathematics, programming, and information processing.
