Graduate School

Graduate School of Science—Deepen the Understanding of Science at Nagoya City University

We aim to contribute to the development of scientific technology in the fields of life sciences, materials science, and mathematical information science. In addition, we strive to nurture open-minded science specialists capable of an interdisciplinary approach and those who can see the situation from a comprehensive perspective.

Information and Basic Science at a Glance

Recent progress in the field of natural sciences and information sciences has been quite outstanding. The Department of Information and Basic Science offers students an opportunity to study in an interdisciplinary research field, which constitutes, on the one hand, grasping natural science phenomena from the informatics perspective, and on the other hand, applying phenomena or laws revealed in natural sciences to informatics, in an attempt to integrate the two fields for further advancement in both fields.

Small group lesson

We accept students from different backgrounds, such as office workers and international students. Inspiration based on the fusion of such differences is a crucial power to pave the way forward. The enrollment cap is 15 for the first semester in the Master’s program and 5 for the second semester in the Doctoral program, allowing students to receive detailed research guidance. Such small group teaching enables the faculty instructors to contact each student directly in both seminars and lectures. Furthermore, students can use expensive experimental instruments for no cost in most cases, which is vital to perform experiments effectively. Advanced research apparatus, such as next-generation DNA sequencers, capillary-type DNA sequencers, intermolecular interaction analyzers, electron microscopes (transmission-type and scanning-type2), image analyzers, microimaging FT-IR spectrometers, and X-ray analyzers, are got ready, which is an attractive experimental environment.

Several research fields and instructions provided by multiple professors:

To facilitate collaboration across several research fields, professors with majors in different fields (mathematics, informatics, physics, chemistry, biology, and exercise physiology) teach two main courses, life information, and nature information courses. In principle, the class is conducted by a single professor; however, students can receive lectures by multiple professors in related discipline areas.

Flexible curriculum

To flexibly handle students with different backgrounds, we provide day and evening courses, and their curricula have been developed after due consideration. After students can cultivate basic knowledge through the learning of common subjects, they select one specialized course (life information or nature information course) to deepen their understanding of that field. Furthermore, they can widen and deepen their knowledge by selecting several subjects related to each other.
