Satisfy your curiosity and realize your dreams

Shigeto KAWATA
Dean, School of Biology and Integrated Sciences
Director, Graduate School of Science
(Professor, Division of Mathematical and Material Science)

As the only public university with three medical faculties (Medical School, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and School of Nursing), we have been actively engaged in education and research that contributes to the improvement of the health and welfare of the citizens. In April 2018, we established the School of Biology and Integrated Sciences as our seventh faculty, and this year marks the fifth year since the establishment of the faculty.

Until now, the three Tokai prefectures of Aichi, Gifu, and Mie have had very low admission capacity for undergraduate science students, compared to the rest of Japan. It has been an unfortunate situation in which students cannot choose their ideal career path in their beloved hometowns. In order to resolve this situation, we have made a decision to establish a new faculty of science for the first time in 76 years in the three Tokai prefectures. In 2020, the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Graduate School of Natural Sciences, we changed its name to the Graduate School of Science.

Science is the study of natural phenomena and the construction of theories related to them. It is the universal orientation of mankind to unravel the truth of the enigmatic natural world. Understanding natural phenomena based on logic enables the accumulation of scientific knowledge and its transmission to others from generation to generation. Science, which pursues the truth of nature, satisfies human intellectual curiosity, fulfills the dreams of mankind, and contributes greatly to the development of society as a foundation for the development of applied studies. With an eye on the future, we will expand the research and education that will serve as the foundation of the scientific field without myopically biasing its research objectives. Our 23 faculty members, who are diverse in their fields, are committed to the ideals of science education.
